Simply put, cancer is a term used for many diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. These cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.
There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Most are named for the organ or type of cell in which they start; however, it can be grouped into broader categories.
Main Categories:
Carcinoma — Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the skin or tissue that lines or covers your internal organs. Subtypes include adenocarcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma.
Sarcoma — Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective/supportive tissue.
Leukemia — Leukemia is a cancer that affects the blood-forming tissue in your bone marrow. When this occurs, abnormal blood cells are produced and introduced into the blood stream.
Lymphoma & Myeloma — Lymphoma and myeloma are cancers that start in the immune system.
Central Nervous System Cancers — These are cancers that begin within the tissue of the brain and/or spinal cord.
